Behind Bars

She paces back and
forth, restlessly. Her muscles ripple through
her orange and black striped
coat. She opens her jaws wide, exposing
sharp fangs as she roars
at the thick bars that inhibit her. The
majestic creature
slinks towards her cub, the only thing in
her control. She nips
at his paws, playfully. Her gaze turns in
the direction of
the father. Too busy basking in the
sunlight, he pays no
attention to them. Now she waits for her
meal to come. The male
still gets first pick of the meat, but she no
longer must hunt for
food to feed her family. The tigress
impatiently leaps
from the artificial rock. Four mighty
paws land on the ground
with ease. Her jewel-like eyes meet those of
a woman who stands
behind the bars, nervously twisting the
ring on her left hand.
